wellfleet bay wildlife sanctuary

The Wellfleet Banding Station is located in Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Founded on the site of the historic Austin Ornithological Research Station, it belongs to a tradition of bird banding on the property that reaches back to 1926.

As such, and also due to its unique geographical location on the Outer Cape, it is a valuable addition to a growing collection of banding stations on Cape Cod that includes our own Monomoy Refuge Banding Station in Chatham, Wing Island Banding Station in Brewster and Manomet Center for Conservation Science.

Two experienced and licensed banders operate the station daily in the spring and fall with the help of volunteers. One of our primary goals is to increase knowledge and awareness of the avian life on the sanctuary and in the region, so in addition to daily eBird reports, we regularly host live banding demos with school groups and visitors to the Sanctuary.
